Facial fillers in men can be very effective in reversing early gravitational aging in the face and in achieving a natural result with little to no downtime.  It is critical to understand the male facial anatomy to achieve a result that is balanced and does not feminize the male face.

Facial fillers come in a wide variety of formulations and choosing the right filler is important to achieve the optimal result:

    • Hyaluronic Acid Fillers (Juvederm/Voluma/Restylane):  Hyaluronic acid filler such as Juvederm and Restyland are the most popular fillers.  These fillers are soft, pliable, and easily molded or shaped.  These fillers last about one year in most cases.  HA fillers are ideally suited for the deeper lines around the mouth:  nasolabial folds and marionette lines.  They can also be dissolved with a medication if the result does not meet expectations or is unwanted.

    • Collagen with PMMA (Bellafill):  Bellafill combines collagen with PMMA microspheres to give a smooth and very long lasting filler.  Collagen is a very smooth filler that is well tolerated in delicate areas such as the lower eyelids.  The PMMA microsphere component stimulates the body to produce it's own collagen to replace what was injected.  Bellafill has an FDA approved indication for 5 years making it the longest lasting filler.  Bellafill can be used to replace lost volume in the face in the temples, midface and cheek, nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and around the jaw.  Bellafill is also FDA approved to treat acne scars.

    • Poly-L-Lactic Acid (Sculptra):  Sculptra Aesthetic is a longer lasting filler (24 months on average) that works over time to rebuild collagen and replace lost volume. Sculptra give a very natural result but is more of a process than a one and done filler.  In a series of injections, Sculptra is placed in areas of the face which have lost volume to stimulate the body to rebuild it's own collagen in a process known as collagen remodeling.  Younger patients who are able to more effectively make collagen require fewer treatments while older patients require more.  On average, 4 treatments are necessary spaced about 2 months apart.  Sculptra does require some post treatment care where the areas are massaged for 5 minutes, 5 times a day, for 5 days.

    • Calcium Hydroxylapatite (Radiesse):  Radiesse is injected to provide immediate volume and correction but continues to work by stimulating the body to produce its own natural collagen.  Over time, the gel in Radiesse is absorbed and the body metalobolizes the CaHA microspheres leaving behind only your own natural collagen.  Radiesse is a good filler to replace lost volume and can be placed into the nasolabial folds, marionette lines, jowls, and around the chin.  Radiesse is also FDA approved to treat aging hands.
